Fit Momma Wish List: "Born To Run" by Christopher McDougall

Holidays are coming!  Here's another addition to the ever-growing "Fit Momma Wish List":

In the long (OK, not so long) history of Trainer Momma I have recommended a grand total of one -- count it -- one book.

There are many reasons for that, but most of all, if I'm going to recommend something for you to read in your little window of spare time, I've got to believe in the book and its message 100%.

I've have officially found another book that has inspired me like no other book has in quite some time and it definitely has earned a place on the Holiday Fit Momma Wish List.

The book is called "Born To Run:  A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen" by Christopher McDougall.

Wow.  Where do I begin?

It is the true story written by a journalist who set off to figure out why his foot hurt when he ran.  His quest landed him in the Copper Canyons of Northern Mexico running with the Tarahumara Indians along with the top ultramarathoners in the world.

The author is an excellent writer (that is a must for me) and pulls together an incredible cast of real-life, colorful athletes whose talents are mind boggling.  I was in awe of Scott Jurek, cracked up at Barefoot Ted, admired Caballo Blanco for his authenticity, couldn't get over how Jenn and Billy could pull their runs out of a hat, and was intrigued to learn more about the quiet Tarahumara Indians and their ancient cultures.

Mr. McDougall  pulls in tons of history of the sport of ultramarathoning and gives us mile by mile accounts of some of the craziest, most intense races of all time.  He digs into the ancient past of certain tribes and convincingly explains the theory that we are all truly "Running People".

There has been boat loads of research done for this book and the author has an easy, entertaining way of explaining it all to all of us non-scientists out there (my hand is raised).

He does jump right into the middle of the barefoot running debate and it is quite obvious where he stands on the matter (he's tossed his Nikes, let's put it that way).  He puts some interesting ideas out there why our feet hurt, our knees hurt, our hips hurt when we run.  It's not because we aren't meant to run, only that we are running the wrong way.  He argues that we are all born to run if we just get back to our roots and run like we used to.

More than anything, this book dishes out so much inspiration that it makes you want to just close it up, step outside your front door, and just run.  And run. And run.

I will admit, I have done just that for the past few weeks since I finished the book.

I still can't say I'm even remotely interested in running an ultramarathon, or a marathon, or a half-marathon -- but during the short distances that I do run a few times week I find myself much more relaxed and settled into the rhythm of running.  I am actually enjoying running for the first time.  Ever.  That's a far cry from my jogs -- or more accurately termed "hobbles" -- that I used to take.

I must mention, since this is a G-rated blog, there is occasional "rough" language in the book.  Despite that, I still highly recommend it to anyone.  Runners or non-runners alike.

And who knows -- even though I am HUGE fan of my Newtons, after reading this book, I'm just that much closer to getting me a pair of these babies:

Windcrest Triathlon - 44

How about you, Fit Mommas?  Have you read "Born to Run"?  What did you think?

** Full disclosure:  I was in no way paid or compensated to read or review this book.  The Doc shoved it under my nose and insisted I read it.  I'm very glad I did.

You can find "Born to Run" in my Trainer Momma store.  It is listed in  the "Favorites" tab under the Trainer Momma header or you can link to it here.

Eat With Me: At Book Club

Welcome to Mandi-ley!

It was my turn to host book club.  This particular book club has been up and running for nearly 25 years, and my time with these ladies each month is invaluable for my sanity.

This month's book was "Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier.  My sisters and mother read this book years ago and I always held out since I didn't think it was my style.  I finally cracked it open once while I was visiting Arizona and I was utterly consumed.

Not to turn into Ms. Cliff's Notes or anything, but basically this very young girl gets married to a very rich man named Maximillian and he moves her to his estate called "Manderly".  Well, I decided to break out with my Grandma Melba's heirloom china and turn my house into "Mandi-ly".  Get it? I don't think anyone laughed harder than me as I repeated that joke 15 times as each gal walked in my door.  It never got old.  I'm still smiling :)

Along with the china, I inherited this vintage dress is also from my late Grandma Melba.  It is the dress she wore to my parent's wedding reception in 1969 -- nearly 41 years ago!  It was sewn by my Grandpa Eddie's sister, Rose, who was a milliner.  The fabric is still so vibrant, the stitching so solid.  What a gem!

It is not mandatory for us to give a huge spread or dress up for that matter.  I just focused on light, simple, and pretty healthy.  Plus everything looks better on my Grandma Melba's china.  That woman had some class.

On the table:

Vegetable platter

Roasted red pepper hummus
Whole wheat pita bread

Strawberry trifle with mini chocolate chips

Water with lemon

We did our best to make this a formal affair.

Plus, I needed an excuse to wear this darlings:

We all had a ball, had a very enriching discussion, and stayed up way too late on a weeknight.  That translates to a successful -- and typcial -- Book Club night.  See why I love these ladies?  And yes, I did stay up late washing Grandma's china.  But as one of my very favorite blogging friends  wrote on her blog, "I love you enough to wash your dish."  And, your china cup.

Gotcha!

OK, OK, OK. Yes, yesterday's Eat With Me Post was definitely an April Fool's joke. I simply could not resist. Plus, I was putting it together and posting at 11:30 PM one night and I was a bit looney.

However, I must give credit where credit is due.  No, I did not actually eat that huge burger nor separate all those oreos to make the world's largest Double Stuffed Oreo x 30.  I pulled those photos from one of my family's favorite sites called "This Is Why You're Fat" at http://thisiswhyyourefat.com/.

The food concoctions on that site are hysterical and make me moan and groan more than salivate.  There are so many uses for bacon -- I really had no idea.  And I learned you can basically deep fry anything you set your mind to.

They are coming out with a book and the subtitle cracks me up:

ThisIsWhy-pb-c-300x300

On that note, have a wonderful weekend with your families!  Enjoy the weather, the beautiful holiday, and perhaps a few jelly beans :)

FYI - "This Is Why You're Fat" did not pay me to promote their site or book.  I just think it is a riot and wanted to pass it on.

Book Pick

When recommending a book about fitness, I do not take it lightly. I read a bucket load of fitness books, and a lot of them are in the trash along with the bucket load of baby books I chucked in there over the years. Many are useless. So, when I find a book that resonates with 11 years of my fitness and health obsession -- I want to share it with one and all! I dance a jig! It keeps me up at night! I want to gift it to every one I know. In other words, I get dang excited! This first book is featured in my front room on the book case next to my favorite classics like To Kill a Mockingbird and Pride and Prejudice. I'm not making that up. The book is called:

The ABS Diet for Women
by David Zinczenko

It is much more than just another diet. It is written by the editor-in-chief of Men's Health and Women's Health magazines. He is a funny, clear writer and just explains nutrition and weight lifting in a very simple manner. I agree with him on MOST points in the book (that's another post!). Overall, it is sound, normal, livable guidelines and ones that will get you eating much healthier and exercising much smarter. There is a companion book also to help you make better food choices on the go and is full of more recipies. I also have noticed that he keeps riding the ABS Diet wave, and Zinczenko has come out with additional books, DVD's, etc. I haven't looked into those, however I'm sure it is just more of the same. Good stuff.

**Just to be very clear:
I was not paid, compensated, or asked to review this book in any way shape or form. On this blog, any book or product I recommend is because IT WORKS, not because I was paid to endorse it.
